Why Would an Exhaust System Leak?

Why do exhaust systems leak? The exhaust system involves the manifold, catalytic converter, resonator, muffler, and the tailpipe. Turning the vehicle on and off over time causes contraction and expansion of the manifold gaskets. Small holes form from everyday wear and tear. Over time these little leaks grow.

A properly functioning exhaust system removes deadly fumes from the engine and safely disperses the gases outside. Leaking systems can allow the odorless fumes to build up in the cabin. The fumes are dangerous and are fatal.Signs of a leaking exhaust are changes in gas mileage. If the system begins to leak, it forces the engine to work harder, which burns more fuel. New vibrations on the pedals or steering wheel, and pops or hisses coming from the motor or tailpipe are other signs that something might be wrong with the exhaust.
