How to Know When an AWD Vehicle has a Problem in the Transfer Case

First, it’s important to know what the transfer case does. Depending on how your vehicle is configured, your transfer case is comprised of a chain or a set of gears. The ultimate purpose is the same with either configuration. It’s intended to evenly disperse speed so that all four tires contact the ground at the same time.

There are a few symptoms that your AWD vehicle will exhibit when it needs service. One of them is leaking oil. The seals become brittle and wear out with time – causing oil to leak. When the oil level gets too low inside the transfer case, it will cause the gears to grind without engaging. Another sign that the components aren’t lubricated is the gear shifting out of place.
