Distinguishing Between Vehicle Warranties

The basic warranty options that are covered by the manufacturer on new and certified pre-owned cars are the bumper-to-bumper warranty and the powertrain warranty. Keep in mind that neither of these warranties covers "wear parts" under the hood, which means that some parts are intended to wear out over time and will not be replaced by the manufacturer.

The bumper-to-bumper warranty is the comprehensive warranty option because it includes significant parts from the front to the back of the car. It is better than a powertrain warranty, which is responsible for the components of the car's propulsion system only. One of the drawbacks with a bumper-to-bumper warranty is that it generally expires much faster than a powertrain warranty. When your bumper-to-bumper warranty expires, the powertrain warranty may still be in effect.
